HI,
can you tell me exactly which parts you replaced please.
Rich.
the igniton swith, and
the lock cylinder assembly
Are you using a lock cylinder from another car or did you obtain it from your dealer?
And it came with a matching key?
yes ,two new keys were i
ncluded
I apologise for all the questions, but they are important. Lastly, so the original key for the car no longer works in the ignition barrel?
correct
Right. In the first month of 1995 the immobilisation system EWS 2 was introduced on BMW cars. I suspect this is where your problem is. You can confirm this by checking to see if you have black plastic ring around the ignition key slot, it should have been on the end of the old barrel when you removed it (has 3 wires coming off it going to a plug connector). This black plastic ring contains a coil which picks up the signal from the chip in your old key, this information is then passed to the EWS control unit which in turn tells the engine management to authorise engine start.
If you still have your old key then you can test this. You will need to remove the ring from the barrel, leaving it plugged in, and hang your old key in it while turning the igntion with your new key.
Yes, i see the black plastic piece w/the wires, so insert the old key into the old barrel w/the black piece on the old barrel and try to turn the engine on w/the new key in the new barrel?
With the black ring plugged in, and not installed on the new barrel, insert the old key into the ring. Then try and start the car with the new key in the barrel you just fitted. I think that's what you said.
yes, that's it, but how do i get the new key to respond?
Does the vehicle now start?
yes,
Right, good. But i'm afraid it's not all good news. The keys and barrel for your vehicle can only be purchased from your main dealer. The reason for this is that BMW hold all the keys that are coded to individual EWS control units, and must be ordered via chassis number.
The only to make your car start with only the new key would be to have the matching EWS control unit installed (which I suspect they wont have) and then have this alligned with the engine mangement.
