Question
Radiator for 94 saturn sl1 manual - going to firestone tomorrow to have radiator replaced- has a big crack in it dont know why but I think something may have lodged in it it did not overheat but indicator light came on saying coolant low---kept filling it up every 2 miles with anti freeze to keep from overheating as coolant leaked out while driving. Firestone says wants to charge for new radiator and flush and fill for $500 and do pressure test of coolant pressure - if radiator obviously leaking are the flush and fill and pressure test needed or just extra charges? Anything else to look for them to charge me for that may not be needed?

Hi XXXXXXXX and welcome to justAnswer.
If you have extended-fill type antifreeze and it has been replaced in the last year or two years, then you could likely re-use your antifreeze. Otherwise have it replaced (flush and fill).
The pressure test would not technically be necessary if it was known that the radiator itself was the only problem. However, a pressure test may find other weaknesses or leaks in the cooling system such as in a hose or gasket. It's best to discover that at the shop and not on the road.
It's standard procedure for a professional shop to include the extras such as flush, fill and pressure test. It tends to guarantee a better job. A backyard mechanic or do-it-yourselfer might skip the extras and charge less, but a certain percentage of those jobs might end up at the side of the road from a unchecked cooling system leak, or gaskets eaten by acidic coolant that was never changed.
If you feel like taking a risk, and know the consequences, go for a cheaper deal. For the best job and peace of mind, pay the full price.
The radiator cap would be suspect. I would simply replace it if it was original. It may have contributed to the radiator being over-pressurized and splitting.
I doubt if something lodged in the radiator...but if it did you had better find out what it is and where it came from. Modern style plastic/aluminum radiators don't usually last longer than about 10 years, so it may have just been due.
Hope that explains it. Let me know if you have any questions, and you can return to this question even after "Accepting" for further advice.
