Question

I have a miniature dachshund puppy that is on her way to recovering from parvo. She is DOB: 01.01.2009, she weighs aprx. 2#. She had been on inj. Reglan 0.15 ml BID, inj. Baytril 0.1 ml BID, Intravenous fluids for 4 days. Then catheter blew on the 4th day. I have been giving her subcutaneous fluids since Wednesday. There is still a small amount of diarrhea and vomiting, but a LOT of improvement. I'm now giving her 6 ml of H2O po q 4 hrs and 3 ml of Recovery can food (Royal Canin) po q 4 hrs. Two days ago she was almost dead. We gave her 0.1 ml of Torbutrol because she was crying out in tremendous pain and I could not stand to watch her suffer. The torbutrol was given at 9am lasted until the evening. I tried her on Amoxicillin but had to return to the inj. baytril due to vomiting. Tonight she is drinking water on her own and is very much an alert puppy. My problem: She has no use of her hind legs. She pulls herself around and whines because she gets frustrated. Any suggestions? Diane

Answer

It sounds like she may have a problem with a disc in her spine.

This is unfortunately pretty common in this size dachshund unless the breeder is being careful to breed away from it.

This site has some good info on dachshund disc disease

It may well be the pain she was in was from a disc problem.

I hope this helps you!
