How large would you say this area is, in width as well as how deep it goes?

THE MASS UNDER THE SKIN IN ABOUT THE SIZE OF A QUARTER. I CAN'T TELL HOW DEEP IT IS? MAYBE 1/4 INCH. I DON'T THINK DEEPER THAN THAT

Answer

OK, thanks for the information!

It's possible that you are seeing an abscess, which could have arisen from a puncture wound, such as might be caused by another animal's tooth or claw. It's also possible that this is a cyst of some sort, not associated with any sort of trauma.

I don't think it's likely that this is an emergency, based on what you are describing. You can clean the area with a warm washcloth, and even apply a warm washcloth directly over the lump to try to draw out the material under the surface.

Your veterinarian will most likely clean the affected area and flush out the area under the surface with some antibacterial solution. Depending on the appearance of it, a biopsy might be needed, or just a course of antibiotics.

THANK YOU DR DREW! CAN I IRRIGATE THE AREA WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AS WELL?

Accepted Answer

Some initial cleaning with peroxide is OK, but I usually prefer dilute antibacterial solution such as betadine or chlorhexidine, both of which should be available at your local drug store.
