I have not tried anything yet. She is pretty active, but while cleaning her cage today, I found that she has grown a ball on her left side right behind her leg. I usually clean the cage every three days, and notice nothing three days ago. Can you help? Don't know what to do. Thanks

We change the litter yesterday to a Cedar litter, but we were another that is soft and comes in colors and controls the odor.

The hamster is about 8 months to 1 year old.

The ball size is about the diameter of a quater and it is very soft and shiny.

The hamster is eating well and she is active, is not acting like she is sick.

Hi Jerry,

I've been asked to help you with your hamster. Of course it's impossible to be certain based only on an online description, it sounds like your hamster may have an abscess. Abscesses often result after a small wound. Lumps that feel hard are more likely to be tumors. Even benign tumors often grow so large that they interfere with movement. All lumps do require treatment by a vet. Abscesses need to be lanced, and then systemic antibiotics are prescribed. don't try to lance the lump on your own. If it is an abscess, you're likely only to push the infection deeper into the body. If it's not an abscess, you'll create a nasty wound. This isn't an emergency, but I would make an appointment early this coming week. These links will take you to directories of vets who treat rats, and would also be good with hamsters:

I recommend that you get rid of the cedar litter. I'm not sure why pet stores continue to sell it. It has been linked to skin problems, respiratory disorders, and liver disease. The best litter is CareFresh, in the colorless and unscented variety. If you have more questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY. I hope your hamster will quickly reach a full recovery.
