Question

my 18 mth old german shepherd was doing running w/ me when I was mtn biking - a light session... he tore off after a deer and came back a bit slow... he started limping (seemed like the front shoulder was sprained) and now - about 4 hrs later can barely walk without falling down.   should I wait to see how he heals and take him to the vet in the AM?   give him something now? go to animal hospital now?   (does not seem to be a fracture)

Hi there XXXXXXXX,

Thank you for your question regarding your 18 month old Germand Shepherd who seems to be VERY sore on one of his forelimbs ever since chasing a deer! This is a little worrying and it does sound like he is in a bit of pain at the moment. If he seems to be in pain and seems quiet and lethargic, then I personally think you should get him to an afterhours or ER Vet now if you can. Here they can palpate his shoulder and leg and possibly take some xrays - or they may want to get him stabalized and give pain relief first and foremost depending on the severity of his injury./

As you can imagine there are a number of things that could be causing this pain - ranging from a fracture (complete or incomplete) a muscular, tendon or ligamentous injury, a displaced shoulder or pain from OCD or elbow dysplasia. I think it is better for this problem to be seen sooner rather than later since he seems to have been worsening in severity over the last 4 hours.

Best of luck with your boy and do be sure to let me know the outcome of this problem won't you. Just reply if you need further info.
