Question

One of our two shitzu's died 5 days ago from an apparent heart attack. The scene was pretty horrible and is stuck in my memory all too well. I am concerned about how this will effect our remaining dog. We are giving him so much attention, so that base is already being covered. Are there any other things that we should specifically be doing to ensure that this transition to not having his buddy around is fairly smooth? How long do dogs grieve approximately? Will there ever be a day when he doesn't sit in the window and look for his best friend? I'm so sad for our loss, but now i'm so sad for his loss even more.

Optional Information

Age: 9; Male; Breed: Shitzu

Already Tried:
all the standard stuff - lots more attention, going for walks, trips to Petsmart, new toys.

I think I know all the stuff to do, but I want to feel confident that he will get over his sadness eventually. He's eating fine, and loves to do all of the stuff above, but when we're busy and look for him, he's sitting in the window quietly. My gut is telling me that he's EXTREMELY sad because he already KNOWS that his friend isn't coming back. He experienced the death, he's seen us cry our eyes out, and he's a smart dogs in human terms - like he really has human like emotions vs. being a "sit and stay" type of dog.

Hi jhickman,

I am very sorry for your loss. This must be very difficult for you and the pup left behind. Dogs do grieve the loss of a friend whether it be human or another animal and the best thing you can do is keep the remaining pup as busy as possible. Introduce new toys and games, do the things that he loves to do with you. Also keep in mind that dogs do pick up on their owners energy and if you are thinking about your dear old friend, your dog is able to pick up on this mood. Everyone needs to go through the grieving process and each go through it in a different way and amount of time. I am sure that once you start feeling a bit better your pup will to.

There is a beautiful story of the Rainbow Bridge which may help to comfort you. Read it when you are ready. Take one day at a time and know that there is no right or wrong way to the grieving process. It is as individual as you and I. It may help you to write out your memories of your pet, the good, the mischievous, and the bad times.
