Question

I have a mercruiser 4.3 LX, 6 cilynders, carburated with 350 hours. The engine was running perfect and then when I stopped the boat in my slip place I started to listen and I heard a "clicking" noise, something mechanical, rhythm and I can feel that is close to the heads. Normal oil pressure, normal temperature, normal oil level without water. Any ideas ??? I'm afraid to use this boat with this "crackling" noise and turn a small problem into a BIG ONE. THANKS

Welcome to JA

either you need to adjust your valves or you have an exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold

Can I do some test to be sure if it is only valves adjust or an exhaust leak ??? Do I need to replace the exhaust manifold or only the gaskets ??? Could you please give me more advices ??? I have the MERCRUISER REPAIR MANUAL and I am not afraid to use some tools in fact I really like to work in my boat. I just rebuilt my carburetors the boat was running GREAT and maybe I gave to much FULL THROTTLE. HELP ME PLEASE !!!! I can't afford to spend to much money right now in this boat ...

Answer

for the exhaust leak, start the boat up and feel around them for warm air coming out

as for the lifter, it could be a stuck lifter, i have seen that more than once

thanks again for your prompt reply...

do you think the best way to solve this problem is to replace the exhaust manifolds and open the cylinders head and adjust the valves???

Do I need special tools for it ???

tks

Answer

you will need a torque wrench
do he exhaust manifold check first
then come back on here to this question

all you need to do is pull the valve covers
read over the manual

Hi ... I'm back here

I started the engine this morning without probelms. Just turned key and the engines was running. The "clicking noise" is there... I can't feel any HOT AIR coming from the Exhaust Manifold...

Should be the lifter ??? How could I be sure which one ???

Do I need to replace all of them ???

Tks
