Optional Information

Age: 1; Female; Breed: Lab Mix

The dog was given a prescription for metronidazole but she won't keep the pills down. She will vomit up a clear mucos. We have been doing a lot of hiking, and I did wash her with a tick and flea shampoo. She is using advantage but I still had to remove ticks from her. She has been sick for 48 hours. She did drink from a near by creek which may have Giardia, but we do a lot of himing and she drinks from creeks often. I have another lab who is doing fine.

For now don't worry about the pills. If she can't keep them down then she can't keep them down. I do suggest pulling all food and water at this time. You can try to offer some ice chips from time to time but she needs time for her stomach to settle right now. Definitely get her back into the vet tomorrow because if this continues she is going to get dehydrated and she may need to be placed on IV fluids. Mixing the chemicals of advantage and the flea and tick shampoo can cause some issues. Most of the time these are neurologic and not gastrointestinal so I am inclined to think these may not be related. I recommend against doing this in the future though and pick up a proventic collar from a vet to help with the tick issues or consider trying frontline instead.

I would consider having her tested for lyme disease if ticks have been a big issue for her and you are in an area where lyme disease is prevelant.

So, my suggestion for now is to fast her and see your vet again tomorrow.

Theresa
