Question

My dog is a two year old mix breed. About three weeks ago, his eyes were producing lots of clear mucus and he appeared to be squinting, like his eyes hurt. The vet put him on amoxicillin, gave him a shot of antibiotics and IV fluid because he had a fever. Five days later, he was no better. This time the vet put a stain in his eyes to look at them better. She saw only irritation. He had only a slight temperature this time. She gave me Tobramycin (I think) drops. His eyes looked horrible within an hour. He could barely open them. I called and the vet said it was a reaction to to stain. After a week, his eyes were no better. On Thursday, she looked at his eyes again and said she thought she could see an ulcer in one of his eyes. She gave him a salve antibiotic. He also had an ear infection. 4 days later and his eyes are no better. He looks like they hurt and I am so upset. I am going to try to see another vet tomorrow. Any ideas or thoughts.

Hello:

I have some questions for you:

 1. How much does your dog weigh?
 2. Was his eye pressure checked?
 3. Is he on any pain medications?

Awaiting your reply.

He weighs approximately 65 lbs. He is not on any pain meds. His pressure has not been checked. I took him back in today (4th visit)and they did another Fluorescein stain. The vet said that she saw some pooling. When they cleaned out his eyes with saline, alot of junk (yellowish) came out as was the case the last time. She told me his eyes had a look to them kind of like when you look at a soap bubble. I took it to mean how it has almost a rainbow effect. She said she now suspects that the aqueous (sp?)part of his tear production is insufficient causing dry eyes, an overproduction of the mucus component of the tears and irritation is starting to cause ulcers. Today, she put him back on Tobramycin drops and told me to let them stay in his eyes a few minutes and then follow up with Optimmune ointment. I asked about cleansing his eyes before I apply the meds, they told me I could use eyewash.

When I came home later today, his eyes looked quite a bit better, however, when I washed them out and applied the Tobramycin, he acted again as if he was in pain, squinting and closing the third eyelid. When I later applied the Optimmune, it seemed to help.

His breed is unknown as he was in a shelter from the time he was a pup until I adopted him at about age 2. He is thought to maybe be a hound, shepherd mix. Large, but lean. He suffers from the tramautic effects of his life by often hiding in one room of the house. He was really getting much better even beginning to socialize with company, but unfortunately, this has traumatized him back into hiding.

I read that a test can be performed to measure tear production and I guess I am wondering now why that hasn't been done. I have huge vet bills because I also adopted a dog with Addison's and recently took in a foster that was ultimately left in my lap. I really need to get to the bottom of this because I am being $80'd to death right now. If I feel that I need a CERF in my area, do you know how I can find one?

Hello Sam:

Was a Schirmer Tear test performed? A small paper placed in the corner of the eye?

Is he on any pain meds?

Are you looking for an ophthalmologist? The Canine Eye Registration Foundation is usually used to ensure that breeders are not passing on breed-related eye problems. Let me know what area you are in and I can recommend a board certified opthalmologist.

No, he is not on pain meds. Paper was placed in the corner of the eye, but I understood that to be a fluorescein stain. She put colored drops in his eye and some sort of paper. My bill just lists Fluorescein Stain. I asked her about pain meds and she didn't really answer me. I had an eye infection once and it was terribly painful. I don't want him to be in pain. If he is not better in a day or two, I will be looking for an ophthalmologist because I don't want to mess around any longer than I need to. I am really worried that maybe she is missing something and we are wasting time that could cause him his sight. His eyes aren't looking good to me tonight. Still squinting alot and sometimes the third eyelid is extended.

I live in the Myrtle Beach, SC area.

Also, how do I pay you? I am new to this, so I don't know, but I would like to since you have been kind to respond. It is very unsettling not really knowing if I am providing the best care I can for him. My vet has always been very kind and accomodating, but we never know who got good grades and who didn't. I do, however, know about Perdue's excellent vet reputation. I lived in Indiana as a kid.

You may want to have a board certified opthalmologist check his eyes. It may be a more expensive exam fee, but they are experts in this area and may be able to solve the problem in less visits.

Here is the website to a specialty clinic in South Carolina with an ophthalmologist on staff: http://www.carolinavet.com/ I'm not sure how close you are, but I'm sure you could give them a call and they could refer you to an ophthalmologist closer to you.
