Hi mickey856930 and welcome to JA
There are different versions of ET. They all look and work the same way but have different liscencing arrangements and this could be what is not allowing you to connect to the engines that are not in trucks. You would have to check with the dealer who sold you ET to be sure. Now that that is said lets see if there is some other issue that is causing you not to be able to connect. Have you tried connecting on the different data links ( j1939, ATA or j1708 and cdl j1587)?
yes i have tryed all those options i have et 2008b in the trainer in cat et has a cat C9 industrial engine that might not mean anything thats just what i have seen i have looked up the C10 engine and it is supposed to use the 1939 im just wondering if im using the right Caterpillar adapter there is one on the nexiq web sit called HD Caterpillar adapter what is ata if you dont mind me asking
ATA stands for american trucking association and was the industry standard for engine communication for quite a few years but was limited as to what could pass on the data stream. Then j1939 came out which is basically the same thing only faster and it allows more information to pass. Since these data streams were industry wide not just cat in order to send information from a new sensor that wasn't on there list you had to apply to the society of american engineers and get permission. By the time it got through all the red tape in could take a couple years. That is why cat developed cdl or cat data link for there own use in the early years, but now j1939 does everything on both previous data streams and then some. Just about all of the cables work the same just different pin configurations. I personally use the cat communication adapter and there basic cable hooks to all industrial and marine engines. I then have to use an adapter for the truck engines. I will post the pin outs for both the truck connector and the industrial connector and that might be your problem as they are very different.
Industrial
pinA= +battery
pinB= -battery
pinC= J1939 shield
pinD= cdl+
pinE= cdl-
pin F= J1939-
pinG= J1939+
pins H and J are not normally used
Truck connectors there are two different ones black and gray the only difference between them is that pins A and B are reversed. This is the gray one
pinA = + battery
pinB = - battery
pinC= J1939+
pinD= J1939-
pinE= J1939 shield
PinF= J1587+
pinG= J1587-
These are the most common configurations but some oems vary them up a bit.
if you dont mind me asking wich device do you use for trucks
Same thing if it is a cat engine the cat communication adapter can do it with a couple adapter cables. For Volvo trucks we use Vodia which is Volvos diagnostic tool and for everything else we use a pro link set up.
