Question

Just found cream/white dry matter almost like soft sawdust on top of patch of cat pee in the litter box (cat seems fine) Litter is dark grey and it isn't litter, it was on the top of the little mound of damp pee. It is soft, not crystals, about large spoonful amount, could it be from her bladder?

Hi Pam,

What did she eat last?

Does she have any known health issues?

Is she overweight?

Thanks,

Terri

Hi - no she is not at all overweight. Just a small female neutered cat, ate usual pouch of cat food early morning with a couple of tiny cat biscuits. I think the urine was overnight, she usually only uses the box at night. She seems fine, just such a very curious thing to find in her box! She doesn't appear to have any problems with passing urine at all.

Answer

Hi Pam,

I do not think this is a concern. Sometimes the urine will look foamy or whitish due to an excess of protein or underhydration.

I would up her fluid intake by offering tuna water and even a bi tof milk.

Cats are not big drinkers unless we give them something very tasty

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri

Terri - the stuff in the litter box is definitely not foamy or white urine, it was like something has been deposited, dry, on top of the patch of litter that is damp with urine. It looks almost as if someone has put a large spoonful of fine wood shavings, or grated cheese, (sounds weird but that's all I can think to describe it!) Nobody has touched the box, so it is just from the cat. No other animals, and no insects around (we are in Scotland, cold winter still!)

She drinks water daily, so not dehydrated. Could it be something passed as faeces, and I have thought it to be the top of a patch of urine in the litter because it was damp or watery when passed? My husband thinks it looks almost like stuff from a wasp nest - it is also soft and flakes apart, not crystalline.

Could it have been expelled in feces?

Has she passed any other stool as yet?

Terri - not in her litter box, but she is in and out all day and only uses it at night if she needs to. (She went in it the night before, and was fine) I have also checked her out, and her bottom is clean, doesn't have anything on her fur. A mystery! Not seen anything

like it with any cat we ever had!

I wonder now if that could be that she passed water followed by this stuff, which is why it is confusing. Maybe we should keep her in so she has to use her box, just to check when she goes again?

Accepted Answer

Hi Pam,

I would keep an eye on her eliminations.

Sometimes a cat will pass crystals from the bladder but they usually look like sandy grit.

Please let me know how she is later.

Best wishes for her,

Terri
