Question

I have a 95' cavalier that backfires at about 1000 rpms at the same intervals, (sound like a rev limiter) this car has a underdrive crankshaft pully and a slightly ported head, could any of these cause this problem. The CPK and ICM and all underhood wiring has been replaced.

Its a 2.2 ltr and the engine has just been rebuilt. I replaced the CPK, the ICM and all the underhood wiring thinking it might be an electrical problem but still the same problem

If there is a problem with the PCM can I use one from another 95' cavalier with a 2.2?

Answer

Greetings,
I think you can use another pcm from a 95 cavalier with a 2.2L. Codes are always the best and safest. There is a bunch of bulletins on injector cleaning issues. Usually misfires on most newer GM products are from lean issues or ignition wires/coil components breaking down. This style coil failure is common and if the wires are original. You could start by spraying the coils and wires with water, if they are bad you will stall the car and or see the spark arcing to ground. The injectors are known for clogging, you will have to see the spray for that.
Good luck Mike
