it's a 2004 chevy cavalier with 81,000 plus miles 2.2 liter engine i believe. haven't tried anything yet.

Ok, 2 things to check. First is the front brake pads and rotors, and the front wheel bearings. IF there is an issue with either on, replace the needed parts.
