Question

Cornish rex cat 13 years old in good health except has had a limp (Left front leg) for 8 weeks. Went to Vet. He did ROM . Elbow seemed to be causing pain. Gave us pain med to administer Q3 days. Pain med helped but problem is still here. Question: Any further testing you would recommend? I hate to see her on pain med the rest of her life. Maybe there is something else going on?

Optional Information

Age: >12; Female; Breed: Cornish Rex

Already Tried:
Meloxicam .3cc every third day for almost 3.5 weeks now. Our Vet did not suggest doing anything further. No other tests, exams or therapy done. This cat used to be failry active. Now she just lays in her bed. I brought her food and water closer to her. Not sure if I should make her walk. Ohterwise she is healthy. She gets her teeth cleaned once a year. I make sure she gets the very best health care. I can tell she is not happy and she is in daily pain.

Answer

You might ask your vet about using an arthritis supplement if the problem is with the elbow joint. Glucosamine chondroitin is one used to help arthritic joints.

Adequan shots may help to jump start the glucosamine use. You can read about Adequan here

http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/polysulfated-glycosaminoglycan-adequan/page1.aspx

Sometimes the joint issue in an elbow can be repaired but you have to figure in healing time and any other health issues that might make surgery an undesirable option.

If your cat is overweight slimming him down could help.

You might find pet steps so he doesn't have to jump up or down off of favorite places will help too.

Hope this helps you!

So you would not recommend doing any bloodwork, X-ray or any other testing?

Answer

I see you added some more info after I replied (not your fault its a site glitch).

My cats also love a heated pet bed to help with those sore joints. I use a snuggle disc

Here's an example but shop around as prices often drop this time of year

and I also have a pet bed heater that plugs in to warm another bed.

Yes an x-ray of the joint may tell you a lot about what is wrong in there.

If you feel he could have been exposed to a tick carried disease that might be worth checking for.

One last question. If it is only arthritis then can you direct me to Cat Physical therapy sites so that i can establish a protocal?

Thank you for your immediate answers. I will check these options out. I love my cat "Agatha" so very much and feel she deserves to enjoy her geriactric years in as little discomfort as possible.

You might want to consider working with a holistic vet too for alternative therapies such as physical therapy, acupuncture etc

http://www.holisticvetlist.com/#search

I usually search that site by state and small animal to get the biggest list to look through.

As areas vary as to physical therapy centers for animals you might need to ask a local vet about one near you.

There are not to my knowledge sites showing how to do physical therapy on animals on line. You'd want specific exercises for your individual cat and to be shown how to do them if that is a good option for your cat. But here is a video on hydrotherapy
