Question

I sometimes have these very violent images coming in mind, especially when I'm happy or trying to relax. It seems like my mind is trying to pollute every good thought or feeling. Is it normal?

Answer

XXXXXXX,

No, this does not sound normal and sounds like it would be very upsetting. How long has it been going on? IWhat there anything that seems to have precipitated this issue? In my experience, when people are having these kinds of scary images it is usually in the aftermath (sometimes distant aftermath) of a trauma. Do you have a history of trauma in your life?

Nothing specific. As for trauma, nothing recent. In the past though, I can see some traumas : parents divorced and being bullied. There's been a lot of change in my life during the last year : I finished my master degree, got a new job, me and my wife now have a 4 months old son. It just seem like I have everything to be happy but these images keep coming like flashes in my mind. Could it be someting as old as my chilhood or my teenage years? What should I do?

P.S. : I'm sorry for the orthograph, my first language is french.

Accepted Answer

You speak English very well!

Yes, even old trauma can affect our mental health; the things you mentioned might be part of what's going on for you now or the images you are experiencing could be related to something entirely different. It's hard to say without knowing more about you and your history. I would suggest that you consult with a psychologist in person- that way, the psychologist could do a more thorough assessment. Sometimes all it takes is the use of guided imagery and/or hypnosis to help someone get rid of upsetting images that they see; both of these interventions help people learn to relax safely and comfortably and to replace any upsetting mental images they have with peaceful, more relaxing ones.
