Question

i had a stroke nov 23 and have some memory, impulse control and organizational problems. also hurt my neck and arm falling during stroke and have pinched nerves in my elbow and neck. i would like to be tested to see what areas of my brain were affected. went to ucsd to find out but was told to go on prozac that if you are depressed they can't test you, but not functiong at the level i'm accustomed to is one of the reasons i feel frustrated and depressed. they want to do surgery on my pinched ulnar nerve but i don't feel like i am sure i can handle that right now. i also am trying to do repairs and move stuff from a manufactured home i own in the country which i need to get done soon. help. thank you. hopeful

Hi XXXXXXXX,

After any sort of brain injury it is important to remain stimulated as we know that there is ongoing healing over time. If you wanted to have specific testing regarding the deficits you may have developed from your stroke, I recommend "neuropsychological testing". This sort of testing looks at what parts of the brain may be impaired since your stroke. It is done by a psychologist (Ph.D) but is very specific and helpful. You may need to repeat any testing in about a year as your injury heals more.

In working with head injury patients, I have seen a form of "ADD" where there is a decline in concentration/attention, organizational skills, etc. Prozac is indeed helpful for any depression or anxiety but it may not be improving your focus. Consider a consultation with a psychiatrist that focuses on brain injuries or a neurologist that works with a head injury rehab center. They are often quite good at treating these attentional problems. I think there is still much improvement that you can expect.

By the way, sleep problems are not uncommon in your situation. Surprisingly, improving concentration during the day helps people let go at night. Seems to punctuate the day and night rhythm. Good luck, and hope this helps.

i keep busy during the day but at night when i lay down certain unpleasant memories keep coming up. as i lose weight i am becoming more anxious. probably because in high school i was the victim of a football team bet and wass betrayed by the 'hot' star of thr team and had to fight him off, the next day everyone knew that i made him walk back 5 miles to town, kicking him out of the car, had another incident with one of the team later, so it makes me nervous to get in good shape.there was another incident also, more serious, by a relative. but i thought i had put this all behind me and had worked through this stuff. why is this coming back into my mind now/ and what should i do about it?

dear XXXXXXXX,

It is clear that you are going through a very real trauma. Just as you were "attacked" in the past, a stroke can feel like an attack, where you are vulnerable and without control over the events. Please tell yourself that you are not the victim of a stroke, but a healing survivor with a perfect soul now working to heal completely.

The total unexpected nature of a stroke, the interactions with the medical profession, tests, feelings of helplessness and total vulnerability--and the feeling of having absolutely no idea what is happening to you at the time-- can all feel like a 'rape'. Similar feeling-memories bring back the pictures to go with the feeling states. Don't be surprised at this. Have compassion on yourself. Don't push too hard but remain steady on in the healing process. Be gentle. Do what you must medically to help manage any anxiety which can cause you more distress unnecessarily.

At the absolute level of life, remember that your spirit is made in the image and likeness of God and is therefore perfect. The core Truth of who you are--Spirit-- never had a stroke and is not helpless or fearful. Your True Self is only beauty itself. That kind of beauty doesn't bring attacks, only strength. When the fear thoughts come, be kind to yourself and affirm that you are whole and that no part of the real you can be injured. Comfort yourself regularly. Remember.."Fear not little child, for I have overcome the world." This is the inner work that goes in parallel with the work with the medical field when necessary, as well as the neuropsych testing, etc.
Hope this helps.
Blessings
