i settled a credit card debt for cap one by sending 8,000.00 to a collection agent rab inc , have a letter from sgent saying that they accept it as payment in full that it would state on my credit as settled for a lesser amount zero balance. well its still on my credit as of today where cap one just deducted the 8000.00 says i still owe 16,000 . i filed bankrurpt last year when the card was at 18,000 they charged over 5,000 int since that time , i sold my house and tried to settle and they accepted 8000.00 so they lied can i sue

Sometimes there is a lag between the time you enter the settlement and when the credit card writes off the balance of the debt.

 

Under federal law, the credit reporting agencies are required to remove the false information if you contest it in writing and they cannot prove that it is legitimate. You should write a letter to the agencies explaining the error in reporting and attach the letter you received from rab inc saying that the $8,000 was accepted as payment in full.

 

The agencies will have 90 days to remove it.
