Question

My car sounds like the bottom is going to fall out at any time. There is some squeaking come from underneath that sounds like bad box springs on a bed. Could you give me some idea of what it might be and if it will be costly to fix it?

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

When does this squeek happen? Over bumps, any time you're moving? Does hitting the brakes change the noise at all?

I normally hear the squeak when I am turning either right or left, this squeak is more like a dull crunch noise then an actual squeak. It is usually more prominant when I am making a left turn. It also makes a minor squeak noise when I open the drivers side door when I am getting out of the car. I do not hear the noise while I am driving or when I go over a bump.

Ok, so the noise only happens when you are sitting still? Where does it come from-front, rear?

What year and model is your vehicle?

the noise comes from the front, and not necessarily the tire area but around that vacinity. The noise occurs when I am turning not just sitting still. I do not notice it when I am driving a straight path. I thought it might be my shocks, but when I did researched I realized that was not the problem. The year and model of my car is a 2002 PT Cruiser. I hope this helps.

Accepted Answer

Ok. I think you may have lower control arm bushings making noise. The rear bushings that mount the arms to the engine cradle are known to rip out and allow the control arm to rub on the subframe. This will make some noise over bumps, possibly turning, any body roll. You may also have a ball joint, tie rod end, or strut mount making noise. The only way to tell for sure would be to trace the noise with a stethoscope to find the exact source of the noise. I'd recommend getting it looked at as soon as possible, many of these components being loose will cause the car to be unsafe to drive. If a ball joint or tie rod end seperates you'll lose steering control.
