Question

I seem to have a current drain that has ruined 2 batteries on my 2005 530. I had the dealer fix it under warranty Nov. 25 2008, they said it was faulty under hood jumpstart post wiring, now it has done it again after driving it less than a thousand miles. It's out of warranty now, any ideas?

Hi

To proceed further you will need a very good understanding of vehicle electronics a good quality multimeter and portable amp clamp.

This will allow us to measure whats going on with the vehicle.when you exit the vehicle and lock the car the car adopts a shut down procedure.this is what we will need to test.this procedure takes the vehicle about 30 mins to complete.

1.open glove box and the glove box light will be on

2.switch on the map reading light

3.switch on rear window cut out switch the led on the switch should be on

exit the car and lock monitor above 1-3 do all lights go out after 30 mins if they do all bus network has shut down corectly keep checking items over a period time do any of these lights come back on ( also if you have a latter type blade key with start stop button this button is also light does this light go out) if the bus network is shutting down correctly then you need to check the current draw. The best way to do this is with a amp clamp as ideally the battery should not be disconnected connect amp clamp after car has been locked 30 mins and what draw do you have the max for this model is 45 milliamps

I will buy an amp clamp, (I have a multimeter) and report to you tomorrow. Thank you very much. I will pay you when/if I can determine the problem.

Lights turn off after a period of time. Checked battery, it seems to be ok, still have no idea what the problem is. Going to take it into the dealer tomorrow. I realize this is hard to diagnose, but bottom line is this was a waste of money.
