After months of getting steadily more difficult to boot up, my 2004 navigation system now only displays the opening screen. Any suggestions?

Hello, I can help you with this. You may have a bad control unit but there are a couple things you can try. First eject the disc and make sure it isn't scratched or damaged in any way.
If its ok, dis connect the battery and clamp the two cables together. Then turn the key on and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. This is like rebooting a PC.
Then reconnect the battery and enter the code. If that doesn't help, the unit will probably have to be repaired or replaced.

I expect this answers my question. I have inspected the disk carefully and it is immaculate.

During the time when the unit began to fail, when I started the car I woud occasionally have to enter my code. This might work, but sometimes after working for a few minutes it would go back to the "Honda Navigation" screen. Other times the "downloading software" screen came on, followed by the "enter code" screen, but the touch screen would not function. Would you still suggest clamping the disconnected battery cables together, and if I do need a new unit, would you mind suggesting how much that might be? Thanks.

Yes try the reboot procedure. The units are very expensive to replace. 1500-2000 dollars.
