Question

Hi, I am having trouble removing the rear rotor on my 2004 V70 (front wheel drive). The problem is I can only get to one side since the guard is in the way. I don't see a way of getting that off, either.

Optional Information

2004 Volvo V70 2.4L

Already Tried:
beating on the rotor with a hammer, both on the back and the front. I think it is rusted in place, and like I said, I can only beat on the baco on one side because of the guard.

Hello. The rear brakes removed as follows. First remove the caliper. This is done with a 7mm Allen wrench. Second then remove the caliper bracket, this is done by removing the two 13mm or 14mm bolts on the back. Then the rotor may have a small little 10mm bolt in it itself. Once that is removed, make sure the parking brake lever is off, the rotor should slide off. May need a gentle tap to help loosen it from the hub itself, sometimes the drum portion of the parking brake in the rotor, may develop a ridge, causing the park brake shoes to hang slightly.

I hope this helps.

The parking brake is off - should the rotor be able to rotate with this off?

Answer

Yes the rotor should be able to rotate, if not, then the park brake cable itself may be frozen holding on the park brake. Sometimes the shoe itself comes unglued from the metal part and causes lock up.

The adjustment is on the park brake handle itself. Pull the leather and plastic ring around center console. You will then see a 10mm nut on a long rod, simply unscrew this nut and it will loosen the park brake cable, if not frozen.

I hope this helps
