Hello,

This is Dr. Christian.

  • Is the other eye normal?
  • Is your cat sneezing?
  • Is your cat indoor or outdoor?
  • Any other medical conditions?
  • Does the surface of her eye look cloudy or blue and does she squint or rub at the eye?

I have taken my cat to several vets on a number of occasions for his eye. It has a constant discharge that when wiped is brownish/red, almost blood like. If I do not continue cleaning his eye, it turns into very thick scabs in the corner and below his eye. I have used drops, cream/salve and warm compresses for years now and it only seems to get worse. In the last month or so it seems as if the other eyes is starting to do the same thing, but not nearly as bad...it's just starting to get a bit of blackish stuff in the corner of it. Both eyes seem to have crust developing around the entire eye also. I clean this for him constantly...sometimes 3-4 times a day. He is an indoor cat and occasionally will go out into the yard with me in the summer to graze a bit on grass. The actual eyes do not look cloudy or blue, but he does squint often.

Have you taken him to a veterinary ophthamologist?

No, I have not. The different vets that I have taken him to have just given me medications for it, which have not worked. I am not sure if they are considered ophthamologists or not.

Answer

There are licensed veterinary opthamologists in most areas. There are a few possibilities for chronic conjuncitivitis:

  • Dystichia or very fine hairs on the edge of the eyelid that may be very difficult to see without magnification. They can chronically rub on the eye and cause discharge. Surgeries can remove the hairs and relive the rubbing.
  • Chronic Herpes Virus infection- Herpes virus in cats generally affects the conjunctiva of the eye and most cats have had it at one time or another. For most cats they are able to fight off the infection but it goes into "hibernation" so to speak. During times of stress it can re-occur. In some cats there immune system is unable to even fight it well enough to send it into hibernation causing a chronic conjunctivitis. A scrape of the conjunctiva can diagnose it. Unfortunately ointments can only fight the secondary bacterial infection and not the virus itself.

There are some medications that can help a cat fight the virus. Lysine is a supplement that can be given daily. Most normal sized cats would take 250mg twice daily. There are other medications that may help but require a prescription from your vet. I would consider having him checked by a veterinary ophthamologist in your area.
