Question

I have a 4 month old miniature long-haired dachshund. I've had him since Valentine's Day. The lady that I bought him from took very good care of him. All of his shots were current, clean, etc... I took him in a few days after getting him for the shots that he was due for and he did fine. Yesterday he was due for his last 3 shots that would keep him current for about 6 months. My husband was actually the one to take him in yesterday and on the way, he threw up. We just attributed that to car sickness, but as the day wore on, he started getting worse. He wouldn't eat or drink and was just lethargic. He had fever last night and cried quite a bit. I took him back to the vet this morning and the vet seemed to think it was the shots he received yesterday. He wanted to keep him for the day and said that he ate and drank a little. He said to watch him tonight and if he didn't eat or drink much tonight to bring him back in the morning. He has done neither and has been slobbering.Help

Hi XXXXXXX~

It does sound like your pup is having a pretty severe reaction to the vaccines. The fact that he's 'slobbering' tells me that he's nauseated so it stands to reason that he wouldn't want to eat or drink anything if he's constantly feeling like he wants to vomit.

As long as his breathing is fine and he's not actively vomiting or having diarrhea at this point, I think allowing him to rest and relax is absolutely the way to go for tonight. If you have a kennel for him, now would be the time to put him in it and allow him to just 'be'. If he's still feeling poorly in the morning, then definately take him back in to his regular vet. They should, at the very least, be able to prescribe something like Reglan to get the nausea under control.

Of course, should he take a turn for the worse during the night, then do not hesitate to either get him to an emergency clinic in your area, or give your regular vet a call and see what they suggest.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. Sometimes his breathing is very, very shallow and other times it seems that he is breathing pretty hard. He is just so "listless"-it is quite scary! We have become SO attached to him in the 3 weeks that we've had him-we are all just beside ourselves...He is still urinating, although it is a bright yellow. Do you think he may be dehydrated?

Answer

He could be a bit dehydrated. Try offering him water...but if he doesn't take it, don't fret. sick dogs often won't drink, but they do have enough fluid in their bodies to sustain them for short amounts of time.
