I have small thin dark lines (some spots) under my fingernails. What does this mean? These appear regularily under different nails and do go away.

These appear regularily under different nails and do go away. There has never been any trauma to the nails they just apprear then grow out with the nail. Sometimes there is just one and other times 4 or 5. This particular instance they have been there for about 4 days.

Sometimes dark spots under the nail can actually be Melanoma (Believe it or not). It is not a very likely place for it, but it does occur. But before you panic, I think since your is 'growing' off, I would think more along the lines of a fungal infection of sorts. I would suggest showing it to your Physician that you see for regular check ups and let them give you something for nail fungus. Nail fungus (if that is what this is) will take time for it to go away, so you must finish all your medication.

Hope this helps. Please reply if more info is needed.

Hi Milli,

It is definitely not fungus nor melanoma. I have read that it may be caused by Vitamin C deficiency but I eat very well or an indication of heart valve or heart disease... what are your thoughts?

Heart problems can cause ridges in your nails and also dark streaks. B12 defiency can also cause dark streaks. However, they do not usually grow off. They will usually be long term.
