Question

I have a small garden pond measuring 2m X2m X 1m of an irregular shape. I have removed the pond liner and wish to concrete it. What is the best way of doing this? i.e what strength of concrete, any special additives, how many layers etc?

Waited 3 hours for an expert to answer but now have to go to bed! Hoping to get an answer by the morning, perhaps you have no gardening experts???

Answer

Thank you for using Just Answer!

Since you already have a your hole for the garden pond and removed the liner, half the work is already done. You will want to make sure that there is a gradual slope from the top shelf of the pond to the bottom of the pond prior to beginning any further work. You may also want to dig out around the top shelf of the pond and allow some space for decorative rocks to be set in the concrete when it is being poured.

I am attaching a website that details a step-by-step process of creating the concrete garden pond. There is also an attached brochure that you can download to enhance the features of your pond. You may have to copy and paste the web address into your browser.

Please review the process that is outlined for building the garden pond and ask any follow-up questions or points that you need clarified.

Why is there a need to put down a polythene liner first? The whole idea of concreting it was to alleviate the need to fight with a liner! Can some kind of sand/stones mix act as a foundation or base?

Accepted Answer

You can also use hard tamped cinders, gravel or a fine crushed stone for the base of the pond. The liner is an added benefit to provide a barrier between the moisture in the ground and the concrete. The liner also would be helfpful to prevent water loss if the concrete has stress cracks over time.

Good luck with your project!
