Question

The radiator fan comes on as soon as I turn the key on,without starting the car.let us say i want to listen to the radio,the fan is on full blast. I think it is draining the battery and the starter.what do you suggest.Thanks.

My car is 1999 Lexus GS 400.

It has 86000 miles.I take good care of this car.I only drive

7000 miles per year.

I put in a new water pump and timing chain last year.

A mechanic checked the fan switch,he said it is working ok.

He thinks there is something wrong with the electrical system.

Please advise before I spend more money.

You most likely have a sticking fan relay here. Some electrical diagnostics will be needed to better determine which relay is being energized to cause this. do you need some diagrams and checks to go into this system with?

How much do you think it will cost ? at a lexus mechanic not a dealer.

Cost depends on the findings, as with any electrical concern the solution is usually very simple to resolve, the cost is in finding the problem. The system needs to be electrically DIAGNOSED , this is not something you can just throw parts at. Relays are typically $40-60 each if this ends up being the case, plan on $200-500 for diagnostic work depending on what is found.
