Question

My engagement ring is a bit too big, but my fiance bought it from Blue Nile rather than a jeweler. What can I do to get it to fit more snuggly and how do I know which jeweler to use?

Dear XXXXXXX,

COngratulations on your engagement! You can do a couple of things to get your ring to fit. The best is to have it sized by a jeweler, the second is to have an insert put in, that can be purchased at most jewelry stores. Ask if they do the work in house or send it out and how long it takes.

To find a jeweler check with your BBB and ask recommendations from friends. It's important to find one you feel comfortable with as you'll probably go back to them time and again through the years.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Is it better if the jeweler does the work in house, versus sending the ring out? How long is a reasonable amount of time to give a jeweler to size my ring? About how much can I expect this to cost?

Accepted Answer

If the jeweler is highly recommended, then if they do send the work out it should be okay. It's not unusual for this to be done, but it's just nice to know upfront that your ring is leaving the store.
Some jewelry stores are set up to do in house designing and this sort of work. As for the time, it could be 2 weeks, depending on work load. As for the cost, it shouldn't be much. It's hard for me to say since I haven't had one done for quite a while, but I'd say less than $50.
