our ferret was prescribed Metronidazole 50 mg/ml. What is this medication for? How does it work? She had a cough post-surgery to remove a heart work.

The ferret is a year old, purchased from one of the major pet store chains. Yes, a heartworm was removed. Prednisone is the other Rx

Okay, that helps. The metronidazole is given to help prevent any infection from complicating the surgery. It is an antibiotic that is active against the most common contaminants, as well as having anti-inflammatory effects to decrease diarrhea post-operatively.
As a warning, ferrets hate the taste of this stuff. If she fights you when you try to give it, try dipping the syringe in honey or ferretone to make it more palatable.
