Question

I plan to re-locate to California for health reasons.I receive SSI and have been doing so since 2005.I have a Permanent Disability.I presently live in Mass. where I receive Food STamps and I get a $700 SSI monthly check.I do not own or drive a car.I will be living with a relative in CA.I am on 6 necessary Medications.I regulary see a Primary Care,an ENT for Thyroid Cancer,A Rheumatologist for RA and Joint disease and Severe COPD(presently on Oxygen).I am in an HMO that is called Network Health,a division of the Medicaid HMO Mass Health.I am 54 years old and I plan to move because the severe cold and damp are making my problems worse.I am doing this on the recommendation of my Primary Care becuase of quality of life issues.I pay only about $15 a month for drug co-pays.My doctor visits are covered 100%.Since I receive so little in asssistance,I could never afford private Health Care as I have pre-existing conditions and my entire check would be needed for Medical care.

Optional Information

Boxford Mass-relocating to CA, Massachusetts

Already Tried:
Because I'm in the process of moving I have only looked at the application for Cal-Health.Until I have established residency in CA I can not apply for assistance.I'm a truly unwell person,54 years and female. My hands are irreparably deformed from Rheumatoid Disease as is my spine.I can barley hit these keys and have to right click with the heel of my hand.My SSI is sent from the U.S. Goverment but I do get Food STamps and free health care.I lost my ability to work 5 years ago.I'd much rather be in my profession than be an armchair spectator.I am a U.S. Citizen.I cannot even afford $15 right now.I want to make sure I can get some kind of Health insurance in CA like what I have now.I also read that Food Stamps are only given to non-citizens and that the State of CA makes up the difference in your SSI check? Is that true?I just want to add a few more years to my life-In the southwest.I can't type anymore.I just want to stop being in so much pain and I read some frightening things.Because I'm under 62 and I am on SSI I thought that a Medicad based HMO is guaranteed to disabled people. The home I live in is being foreclosed so I have to move.I have a cat I love very much and I want to watch her grow up.I'm really stressed because the foreclosure is eventually going to drive me out.I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack because I have to take a lot of Thyroid meds to suppress my TSH.It gives me palpatations. Can you please give me some advice?
Sincerely,
Debra

Hello Jonathan,

I am currently in MA.I live in Boxford MA,USA.I cannot try anything until I am physically living in CA.,I will need to get a driving lic. even though I don't drive,I still hold a valid lic.I am trying to find out if

A. Does the Food Stamp Credit I get will continue after living in CA.?

B. Who makes up the difference in my SSI check and the much needed Food Stamp credit I get per month-I cannot afford to pay for food and rent.I also cannot work,I can barley type and I had to stop midway here to get up and stretch and my Oxygen hose was blocked.

C. I am on SSI but I'm only 54 so I can't get Medicare like older Americans.

SInce I do not have a Social worker in CA becuase I am not officially residing there I can't get any questions.

What can I expect if I need to go to an ER?-Is this covered as I'm on SSI?

I am extremely sick and I need to do this research before I am forced to move.

Thank You,

Debra

Answer

Thank you for your question and I look forward to assisting you. Please keep in mind that I can only respond to your post and the information contained in it, as I do not know what you know unless you have put all of the information in your question. Also, due to site reasons, oftentimes I am initially only able to see the first part of your post, so I apologize in advance if it means more interactions between us. Also, there may be future facts that are as yet undetermined in your matter, that can and must leave some areas of information provided by me broad in nature. However, don't hesitate to ask for clarification if needed! At times, there can also be a delay of an hour or more in between my answers because I may be helping other customers or taking a break. That being said...

A. Yes, but there will be a waiting period.
B. No one makes up the difference.
C. You would qualify for Medi-Cal upon establishing residency in CA. That would cover your medical bills!

Good luck.
