Question

When driving along in my 2006 Charger, I hit a bump in the road and my wipers turned on. The only way to turn them off was by pulling fuse 18. This has happened several times now

Hello

There are several things that come to mind, but do to the complexity of this system and the amount of control modules in the circuit I hesitate to have you replace any thing with out a proper diagnostic, the most comon are the wiper motor or the wiring at the steering column

You will need a dealer level scan tool to properly diagnose this concern, you need a scan tool that can communicate with the "CAN C" and "CAN B" Bus systems on your car to pull the codes and see if it is under the hood or in the passenger compartment

The most comon issue is a loss of communication with the Steering Column Control Module, if this module drops off the bus, the wipers are set to come on for safety

Here is a quick over view of what is in the system, if you can get the codes and scan tool I can help you with the diagnostics

The wiper and washer system includes the following major components:

  1. Front Control Module - The Front Control Module (FCM) is integral to the Integrated Power Module (IPM). The FCM/IPM is located in the engine compartment, near the right shock tower
  2. Front Washer Nozzle - Two washer nozzles with integral check valves are secured to the hood panel near the base of the windshield.
  3. Front Washer Plumbing - The plumbing for the washer system consists of nylon hoses and molded plastic fittings. The plumbing is routed within the engine compartment from the washer reservoir. The front washer hose is routed across the underside of the hood panel to the washer nozzles.
  4. Front Wiper Arms - The two wiper arms are secured with nuts to the threaded ends of the two wiper pivot shafts, which extend through the cowl panel located near the base of the windshield.
  5. Front Wiper Blade - The two wiper blades are secured to the two wiper arms with an integral latch, and are parked on the glass near the bottom of the windshield when the wiper system is not in operation.
  6. Front Wiper Module - The wiper pivot shafts are the only visible components of the front wiper module. The remainder of the module is concealed within the engine compartment beneath the cowl panel. The wiper module includes a cast aluminum wiper module bracket, two rubber-isolated wiper module mounts, one dowel on the underside of the wiper motor, the wiper motor crank arm, the two wiper drive links, the two powered wiper pivots.
  7. Instrument Cluster - The ElectroMechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC) is also known as the Cab Compartment Node (CCN). The EMIC/CCN is located in the instrument panel above the steering column opening, directly in front of the driver.
  8. Multi-Function Switch - The multi-function switch is located on the steering column, just behind the steering wheel. A control stalk that extends from the left side of the switch that is dedicated to providing all of the driver controls for the front wiper and washer systems, turn signal, and high and low beam functions
  9. Rain Sensor - Vehicles equipped with the automatic wiper feature have a Rain Sensor located just below the inside rear view mirror button. The sensor bracket is bonded to the inside surface of the windshield glass.
  10. Washer Fluid Level Switch - The washer fluid level switch is located in a dedicated hole on the lower portion of the washer reservoir, ahead of the right front wheel house splash shield.
  11. Washer Pump/Motor - The reversible electric washer pump/motor is located in the lower portion of the washer reservoir, ahead of the right front wheel house splash shield. The washer pump/motor is a reversible motor (wagon only) and provides washer fluid to either the front or rear (wagon only) washer system plumbing, depending upon the direction of the pump motor rotation.
  12. Washer Reservoir - The washer reservoir is mounted just in front of the right front wheel splash shield. The filler neck is located in the right front corner of the engine compartment.
  13. Wiper High/Low Relay - The wiper high/low relay is an International Standards Organization (ISO) micro relay located in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in the engine compartment.
  14. Wiper On/Off Relay - The wiper on/off relay is an International Standards Organization (ISO) micro relay located in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in the engine compartment.
  15. Steering Control Module - The Steering Control Module (SCM) is the module located in the bottom of the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM), retained by three screws, and is the mating point for all the switches (remote radio switches, horn, speed control, steering angle sensor, tilt/telescopic switch, multi-function switch, clockspring) located in the SCCM. The SCM is screwed directly to the bottom of the multi-function switch. All the other switches are mounted on top of the multi-function switch.

I hope that this helps you

Thank you
