Question

I have been having problems with my ears and nost, recurrent sinus infections, lots of phelgm and mucus. I take mizollen, sudafed and flixonase. But recently this has got a lot worse, now having balance problems in the mornings in particular and also above my eyes is tender and the discharge from my nose is greeny yellow sometime with like a scab. My GP says it is allergy related I have had antibiotics but nothing realy clears it all together. Have you any ideas?

Info Request

Hello,

How old are you & your sex?

Since when have you started having these problems?

I don't find any mention of an antibiotic out here. Are you taking any now?

Since when has your discharge from the nose turned greeny yellow?

Have X-rays/ CT been done for sinus/ nasal passage?

Any other problems?

Thanks. Shall wait for your reply.

Hello
I am 48 years old and female.
I have been having these problems for about a year, but the balance problems have only got worse in the last 3 months.

I had doxycycline for 3 months from about August 08 and Augmentin just before christmas but only for 1 week.Doctor said that antibiotics would not help.

An X Ray was done about a year ago, but nothing showed up. I did have a problem a few years ago because of a perforated ear drum but they say that is healed. At that time from the scan done they said I had a slightly deviated septum.

Discharge has been coloured since Christmas time before I had the Augmentin.

Using the nasal spay helps but it does make my nose sore sometimes.

I also have asthma and so the nasal drip going down my throat doesn't help, as it can make me chesty. I do cough quite a bit and some times it is quite productive.

I also have a sore throat that comes and goes, but again the doctor said this was normal

Thanks for all the information. Going by the details that you have provided, it seems that you would first need a thorough check up once again. This would include a CT of the sinuses and to see if there is sinusitis or if there are any polyps which might be aggravating your condition. A nasal swab should be sent for culture and antibiotic sensitivity as your nasal discharge rather than being white (as would be expected in an allergy), is now greenish yellow and would require an antibiotic.

You will perhaps keep getting recurrent sinus/ nose/ throat problems and with that an exaggeration of your asthma, until your septal deviation is corrected. This is probably causing nasal blockage and repeated nasal/ sinus infections would also have caused hypertrophy of the nasal turbinates, which would increase the obstruction further and thereby help the germs multiply further.

You will have to discuss these issues with your doctor.

Best wishes.
