Question

we have a female tortoise cat. about 6 years old. we have brought her to several vets and had several diagnosis. she started chewing on her toes right down to the muscles. at the same time the skin on her nose was rubbed raw. they have since cleared up but she now has chewed a 2 inch hole in her rear outside thy. She has gone deeper than the skin and it appears to be infected. she appears coherent and other than the wound she seems normal. Should we put her down or is there anything you can suggest?

Info Request

Hi and thanks for your question.

Has your cat had any tests done to try to determine what this is? Have you tried any medications? If so, how successful were they?

Thanks!

My apologies as the "already tried" info was not available to me when I was typing my initial response.

This sounds like a frustrating problem. While I don't know what it is, I can tell you a few things that I would do to try to help if this were my patient.

I would consider doing a skin scraping to look for demodex mites. These are not common, but when they do appear they can cause lesions on the feet that do not improve even with steroid injections. A skin scraping is not expensive and is quite easy for your vet to do.

If that doesn't reveal anything then I would advise doing a biopsy of the area. This may be a little costly, but should give you an answer as to whether this is something treatable, and how to treat it.

I hope this information helps! If you have more questions regarding this problem, just hit reply. If I am online I will respond right away. Otherwise I will respond as soon as I come online again. Or, if my answer is sufficient, then please hit accept. Thanks!

Dr. Marie.
