Question

I have a small Pomeranian, 4 lbs. she is 10 years old Three years ago she started to loose her fur, she had no undercoat for two winters now. She used to weigh 7lbs. untill three years ago when my husband died. She was overweight for her size. my husband fed her to much steak and snacks. Sice then she lost a lb. a year. The vet said the loss of hair was due to thyroid problems, borderline, she had abloodtest. He also said the hair would grow bak in about 6 month, wich it did not. She had very bad teeth and alot of infections, so they said if she had all her teeth pulled her system would straighten out and the hair would grow back, wich it did not.Of course her diet has changed since now she can only eat soft food. She is in good health otherwise. since the hair did not grow back in they increased her thyroid meds.(Thyroxine L 0.1mg.to 0ne and ahalf pills a day, one in the moralso told me it could take up to 18 month before it starts working. Its getting worse. help please. Dondt have

This breed can suffer from a problem with alopecia hair loss.

You can read about this and other causes of hair loss here.

You may find that using melatonin will resolve the hair loss issue. You can talk to your vet about trying that. Its an over the counter supplement available in many pharmacies as its used by people for jet lag among other things.

Hope this helps you!

Do you have any idea why she might be losing her hair, she does not have much left. And I forgot to tell you that she had little black blisters on her back, when I scrached them it turned into apink open spot. Thank you.

If you read the article above it discusses the use of melatonin for alopecia issues in poms and other breeds.

She may have a skin infection on top of the hairloss issue.

Your vet may want to check her for Cushings disease (also mentioned in the above article) which you can read about here

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_cushing_s_disease.html

But pomeranians can lose fur due to a hereditary issue - like humans inherit baldness.
