Question

On my 2002 Ford Tauris, I recently changed the cam syncronizer and sensor. After changing, I get a code P1633. My code reader does not indicate any problem but when I use the rescanning feature of the code reader to retrieve the most recent data stored in the EMC, I get a message fault 01,P1633   01/01. The engine runs fine. Can you assist me with this problem.

P1633 indicates a problem with the Keep ALive Memory in the powertrain control module. This is usually either a wiring problem or bad PCM. KAM is what the PCM uses to relearn how you drive the vehicle, it may run ok now but could develop into a no start later if it is a problem with the pcm itself. It should not have anything to do with the cam syncro and sensor replacement.

Thank you for your detailed answer. I ended up cutting 2 small wires in the main wiring harness that crosses the cam syncronizer when I lifted it over a hose connection. I carefully repaired the 2 wires with electrical tape and proceeded with accessing the cam synchonizer. Now that the wires are repaired, can I delete this code or delete the code history and see if this fixed the problem. Unfortunately, my code reader will not allow me to clear the code history but other code readers may allow me to do this. Is this advisable? Thank you very much for your time and effort in helping me resove this problem.

Thank you for your detailed answer. I accidently cut 2 small wires in the main wiring harness when I attemped to lift the harness over a hose connection. I repaired the cut insulation with electrical tape and carefully put the wires back into the harness. One of the wires may have shorted out since the battery was not disconnected. Now that the wires are repaired, can I delete the code or clear the code history to get rid of the "check engine light" on my instrument panel.

Thank you very much for your time and effort in assisting me with this problem.

Thank you for your analysis. While replacing the cam synchronizer, I accidently cut the insulation on 2 small wires in the main wiring harness. The battery was still connected and I am sure one of them was shorted out. I repaired the cut insulation with electrical tape and carefully laid the wires with the others in the bundle and taped the bundle.

Am I able to somehow erase the P1633 code or clear the history to get rid of the check engine light.

Thank you very much for your time in assisting me with this problem

Answer

You should be able to clear the codes with a scan tool or disconnect the battery for a minute to see if you repaired the concern. If the light still comes on then there is still a fault.
