Question

when my car reaches normal operating temperature and runs there for awhile, I hear a clicking sound coming from the front of the engine and and the top radiator hose pulses with the clicking. This will continue for a minute or two even after the engine has been shut off

This is a 1993 ford ranger with a 3 liter V6.

Okay. You may be experiencing a problem with the vehicles thermostat. If the thermostat is not functioning properly it can open and close and cause this issue.

that is what i thought and i replaced the thermostat after i noticed the noise, but it still makes the noise even with the new thermostat.

I am not sure if the lower radiatior hose pulsates as well.

Okay. Replace the radiator cap. It sounds like it is not venting properly. If it does not is can cause a vacuum like what seems like it happening.

is it common for radiator caps to fail?

Yes it is. They can cause the vehicle to overheat also if not working properly.
