I am about to buy an f-250 6.0, 2004, 120k miles and am wondering about dependability in light of the issues with that engine when it came out.

Hello XXXXXXXXXXXX, this is actually a very good engine. Most of the troubles have been taken care of on this. The main itme they have a problem with is the fuel system. One is that most people do not keep up on the fuel filter and water seperator changing. This can cause problems. The other problem is the fuel injector module. THese go out quite often on this vehicle. If it has been changed then it should be okay. If not then chances are that you will need to change it in the future for about $800. Other then this you just need to be sure that the vehicle maintenance was kept up on.

Answer
The main thing is maintenance records. If the vehicle was well taken care of then you should be in good shape. So just watch for things like oil leaks and excess exhaut smoke when driving the vehicle.
