The computer is an Elite Systems computer with Windows xp home editions software. I use it occasionally not everyday. It has been a month or so since I used it last. The monitor works but has no signal of course. It's just dead.

Answer

The symptom you list is, more often than not, is usually the result of a power supply gone wrong. While there are cases where the motherboard (main) itself is defective due usually to bad electrolytic capacitors, the power supply is generally suspected first. As there are no user serviceable parts or fuses to change, the only option would be to substitute the power supply with another to confirm a defective one. In the event that changing the power supply does not correct the problem, then the issue is main board related, in which case it is usually better to purchase a new computer unless you can perform the work yourself.
If I can be of further assistance please let me know.

Are you talking about the power supply inside the computer shell. If so what part is it. I have other "older" computers that I could swap power supplies with if that is okay. Is that something I can try or will it blowup if they aren't compatable? My saved files and soft ware information should still be on the hard drive, correct?

Accepted Answer

The internal power supply is the rectangular box at the rear of the computer where the AC cable and On/Off switch are. While swapping parts is sometimes an option, using older power supplies may not be a good idea since they might be underated and many of the older power supplies didn't use some of the newer pin layouts.
