Question

Dog diarrhea (yellow lab, 15 yrs old, female). stool is yellow orange and very fluid. Onset was fairly sudden and has been with her for two days. She was eating dry food with a bit of wet food supplement. Since this began we have been feeding white rice and some chicken. Is the color indicative of major concern? Can we use human immodium? Thanks in advance.

Optional Information

Age: >12; Female; Breed: dog/yellow lab

Already Tried:
Stopped regular food (dry kibble [Prairie] with some wet food [also Prairie] additive) and now feeding rice with some cooked chicken meat. Watery stool is yellow-orange...not brown or bloody. Can dogs safely take Immodium, the human antidiarreha med?

Thanks for the question XXXXXXX.

The colour of the diarrhoea is not particularly indicative of any disease, colour changes can occur with many cases of gastro-enteritis.

I am aware that some owners treat there dogs with diarrhoea with Imodium { Loperamide } and report success. A reasonable dose rate would be 1 capsule (2 mg) per 50 pounds bodyweight if over 20 pounds. The decision whether to use Imodium or not is of course up to you but here is a link to a web site which covers the topic in depth including dose rates and contraindications : LINK

Assuming your dog is otherwise bright and happy you might want to try and control the situation with diet alone before you try anything else, I know you are already doing this to some degree. This is logical and often works, I have often advised my clients at my clinic to do the following :

A. Starve her today but make sure she has access to water.

B. Tomorrow feed her four or five small light meals in the day. These meals should be the likes of chicken, fish, scrambled egg etc. with a little rice.

C. If she pick up on this diet gradually reintroduce her normal diet over the next few days.

Live yogurt added to the food can often help. Some gastro-enteritis situations are caused by an imbalance in the bacteria in your dog's gut. Live yogurt is full of " good " bacteria and will seed them into your dog's intestinal tract and restore the balance.

Of course if this does not work or if your dog deteriorates you should see your vet.

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.
