My computer has both vista and XP. While I was using Xp, I somehow marked a partion as active. Now my XP will boot up but the Vista won't. I'm hoping that if I can change that partition back to the way that it was my problem might be fixed. I very rarely used the xp so it doesn't have any system restore dates on it. thanks

I have both vista and xp on the same computer. I accidentally marked a partition as active and now I can't get it to go back to the way that it was. Now only xp boots up. The vista won't

When you select Windows Vista from the OS Selection menu what is the error that you face?

I think it said something like it couldn't boot up because some type of file was corrupt or missing. Or the problem could be due to a software change also.

Answer

Hi,

To start this Windows install insert the first CD or the DVD into the drive and start or restart your computer

"Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", hit any key on the keyboard to continue
The Windows Vista install will the begin to load
Some of these stages can take quite sometime so be patient.
Now select your install Language,
Time and Currency Format,
keyboard type, once you are happy with the settings, Click on "NEXT" to continue
From the next screen click on "Repair Your Computer" to continue.
Windows will now search for Windows Installations.
From the next screen select the operating system on which you wish to do a repair. Select it, then press "NEXT" to continue
You are now at the "Recovery Options" menu
From the "Recovery Options" menu select "STARTUP REPAIR"...

Windows will search for problems (This may take sometime so be patient)....
If problems are found then Windows will attempt to repair them
Once completed Windows will prompt you to click "FINISH" to complete the repair.
Repair details will now appear, read if need be and then click "CLOSE"
The computer will now reboot, and if Windows was successful in its repair then it should boot to the desktop or login screen.

I tried that 2 days ago. After about 15 miinutes a screen came up saying that it couldn't be repaired. Also. I'm trying not to re install vista because I'm trying not to lose my files.

I Can't Get the files to show up in xp. What I'm trying to do is unmark the partition that I made active. Thats what my original question was. That is Where my problem began, and thats what i'm trying to undo.

Hi,

Did you see the VISTA partition from the XP??

275 days and 3 hours ago.

Reply

I see 2 partitions on xp. one says H and the other says C. H shows my xp files. C was unmarked. When I right clicked C and marked it as an active partition. my problem started. All i'm trying to do is unmark that one partition which should solve my problem.

Answer

Hi,

In the above post I have mentioned the procedure for repair please run it again and select System Restore from the recovery option instead of Startup Repair.

Because this is not a active or inactive problem the file is corrupted that can only be restored by repair or restoreing.

275 days and 2 hours ago.

Reply

I've tried that to. System restore comes up with no restore dates.

Accepted Answer

Then there is no way other than repairing or reinstalling VISTA for further reference you can goto the link below and if I know that where is your files situated exactly in the Vista is it Desktop or Documents etc. I will try to help you for recovering the files
