Question
My dog has always had short but scary wheezing attacks but the vet has never sen it happen nor found anything wrong that showed up in exams so I marked it up to a sort of allergic asthma ( like myself) but now he seems to have a different trouble-he has been like gagging/coughing and today seems so lethargic. I have ben gone a few days but family says he been moping and only eating once a day and the one day was fussing about his ear. I have not been working more that 1/14 days so I am begging for any help! he hasnt eaten today yet and he woudltn get up to go out- I finally carried him out-then he was all for it and went around the block. When they cleared our streeets few weeks ago they sprayed something he kept trying to lick up and I kept dragging him away from-I kept eye on him after and he did throw up a bit but seemed fine for the past 2 weeks other wise I cant think of any other incidents- but then I havent been hoem this week and dont know whats gone on i am just worried-thanks

Hello XXXXXXXXX,
The wheezing attacks you mention may be reverse sneezes - which are caused from some irritation of the pharynx or back of the throat. It is sometimes associated with allergies - but is often an unknown cause. There is not any recommended treatment as it isn't really a problem - although it looks awful. Here is a link to more information as well as video clips so that you can see if this is what your dog is doing.

If that is what your dog seems to be doing - that part is nothing to worry about. A bit of vomiting and being somewhat lethargic can be the result of just some digestive upset. This can be caused by eating something out of the ordinary or getting into the garbage or eating a bone/rawhide too quickly. Since he perked right up after you got him outside - it doesn't sound like he is that weak or lethargic. If you want to try treating him for digestive upset at home the most common recommendation is to fast them for 12 - 24 hours. Then feed a bland and bulky diet of boiled chicken and rice for several days. Then take another couple of days to slowly get back to normal diet. There are a few over the counter medications, like pepto bismol, that can be used in dogs for digestive upset. Here is a link to a list of them with more information for each.

If the dog seems painful in the abdomen, begins refusing to eat anything, is unable to keep anything down, or if the vomiting/lethargy continue for more than 3 days despite the home treatment I would recommend having a vet exam.
If you need more information just reply to your question.

Info Request
Hello again,
Could I get a bit more information?
Will he refuse to eat even a special little tidbit - like chicken?
Do you have a thermometer where you could take his rectal temperature?
Does he seem to have any reluctance to climb stairs or jump on furniture?
Does he seem to have any pain when walking around?
Does he stand with his back hunched up or his tail between his legs?
Does he seem painful or reluctant to move his head back and forth or up an down?

He did get his back leg hurt a bit yesterday but isnt limping or fussing about it-he got down thism orn from his bed on the couch and just went to lay on his dogbed instead fo getting back up- after his walk he went and layed on floor insted of chair like his usual but got him up there adn hes been snoozing-he is not coughinb as much.we dont feed him "people food" like chicken but i KNOW he craves it (we have a KFC at corner and he wasnts to bad to go there adn grabs at every bit he finds discarded on sidewalk if we dont see it first) adn no- i only have a peoples ear thermometer-i dont knwo if he would let me do his ear- its only 10 secs but not sure it woudl work? as his ear canals different.he moving hsi head normal-well normal for his sleepy/lazy self-i will go warm a bit of chicken from my soup ands see if he will try it- i tried to give him small bit of cheese with aspirin like we did when he got hurt 3 yrs ago but he woudlnt take it-maybe didnt cover bad taste enough

Hello again,
If he is refusing to eat anything- than I would really recommend that you try to find someway to have him examined by a vet. Most dogs will simple digestive upset will still take a bit of chicken. One possibility for not wanting to move around much is a back injury - this often presents with a dog that is having rather vague symptoms of not wanting to move around much, not jumping on furniture, etc. They may stand with their back hunched up or their tail carried oddly. If the injury is further up in the neck area they may not want to move their head a certain way. These injuries can be serious (disk herniations) and should be examined by a veterinarian. The normal treatment is steroids for inflammation, pain medications, and possibly muscle relaxants. You can sometimes get the dog to react by wincing by rubbing and pushing along the muscles that run on either side of the spine. Sometimes the dog does not want to eat because they are painful. Since there really aren't a lot of other digestive symptoms this may be a possibility. Other reasons a dog may refuse to eat are nausea due to liver or kidney problems, ingestion, of a foriegn object, or an infection of the intestinal tract. If he is feeling quite nauseous he may not want to move around because of this.
I would examine the dog for any pain in the neck and back region. If you are noticing any of the other signs of this - I would recommend getting him into the vet. If there are no signs of pain in these regions and he will eat the bit of chicken I would treat for digestive upset at home and see how he does for the next day or so. If he refuses to eat the chicken, I would again recommend getting him in to see the vet as there is more of a chance that there is something more serious going on in the digestive tract. I would also check his gums to make sure they are nice and pink. If they are pale or white - he should see a vet as well.
One other possibility I want to mention is that he may be getting a bit arthritic. The sporadic days of not wanting to move around much can be due to such things. If they move around a bit too much one day they may pay for it the next and be quite lethargic. Trying supplements like glucosamine/chondroitin (takes awhile to notice difference)and asking your vet about pain meds may be a good idea as well. This could be an explanation if this is happening along with mild digestive upset for another reason.

That there is a possibility as when we first got him we had and accident adn rushed him to emergency- he was on pain meds adn steroids as he caused me to fall over the puppygate adn it came crashing down on him-injured aroudn top of "withers" or shoulders but he isnt fussing like it hurts-i massaged him and poked about like you said to see if he had pain in belly or where but he just rolled and let me have at him. but when it seems to bother him he gets like shivers-that run across whithers back and forth like uncontrolled spasmic movements like when it happened but usually i can massage and it stops quick-but family might have just thought he was cold-if its anything like the migraines i get from my similar injury no wonder he doesnt want o move or nothing- i stay ill and unable tomove until it realigns. He did eat his cheesey aspirin now adn he ate few chicken chunks from teh soup adn finally drank some water but isnt making amove to get back up in chair- i am going to make him go out adn then see hwo he does on stairs-then i'll know for sure if thats it (his neck i mean)it doesnt bother him to move head but it is bothersome to move up or down stairs teh muscles adn pressure of those movements tell thank you so much for your time-you are a blessing!
