Info Request

Hello XXXXXXXXXXXXX,

I just have a couple of questions.

1) Did she just jump in the tub and jump out? Did he drink any?
2) How long ago did it happen?
3) How concentrated was the bleach to water ratio? 1:10?

I will wait for your response. Thanks!

he jumped in the tub jumped out and started licking himself. this all happened about 2:30 to 3:30 this morning and the tub was filled half way and there was about 1 cup of bleach to dilute cat pee on my sons toys that they peed on so id say 5:10 of bleach

Accepted Answer

The fact that he jumped in and out of the tub and was bathed immediately with soap and water will most likely prevent any skin irritation.

However, the fact that he was grooming himself right away and licking off the bleach water is more concerning. Bleach can cause burns in the mouth, esophagus, and remainder of the intestinal tract. Animals that are exposed to concentrated bleach can even develop abnormalities in their blood work (something called metabolic acidosis).

As a precaution, it would not hurt to have him evaluated by your vet and have him started on prescription GI protectant medication (like sucralfate) and a prescription antacid medication (similar to pepcid AC).

Another option would be to contact the ASPCA poison control center at:
http://www.aspca.org/about-us/animal-poison-control-center.html

However, their recommendations will probably be the same to see your vet for medication and possibly bloodwork.

Please let me know if you need further help.
