Question

Got a 98 blazor that just stopped in the running in the middle of the road. would turn over but not start. Like its getting no gas. Put a little gas in the top of the intake where the air goes in and it started for a second. I can hear the pump kick on and off with theturn of the key. What do you suggest i test and how? vortec engine.

Answer

Hello and thank you for choosing Just Answer!

The next step is to check the fuel pressure. Just because you hear the pump running, doesn't mean it is putting enough pressure in the system to get past the injectors. The fuel pressure specification for this engine is as follows:

If it has good pressure, then the injector will need to be inspected.

If you need anything else, just let me know!

how do I check the pressure, is there a hook up somewhere without taking off a line?

Accepted Answer

OK.. the pressure check valve is on the back of the engine.. here is a picture of where it is on the fuel line, so you can see:

I didn't have an actual pressure testor to test with, but after turning ingnition on and hearing pump run, I checked the gas flow at the testing point and it let out two drops, thats it. I would think it should be pressurize at that point. Given this is there a way to get instructions on relacing the pump?

Accepted Answer

OK, I can give you the instructions on chaning the pump, but keep in mind that it is also possible for the regulator to be malfunctioning. The only reason I say this is.. the pump is very expensive, and I would hate to see you buy one, and put it in, only to have the same problem.

Anyways, the pump is also a common failure... so here are the instructions on replacing it. Depending on if you have a 2 or 4 door version of the /blazer, both sets of instructions are included to speed up the process.... Here you go!

is there a way to check the regulator, if so how and where is it. I know what it looks like, but really didn't see it.

Answer

The BEST way to go about it is to pressure test the fuel system from the filter fitting. The pressures straight out of the pump are much higher, and definately not regulated.

Since you don't have the pressure gauge, though.. you actually need one.. but you can sort of 'back yard' it, by trying to hold the fuel from coming out of the line with your finger.. but this is REALLY not recommended. If you get gas in your eyes and such, it will burn.. and you will have to go get steroid drops for your eyes which is alot more expensive than just getting a fuel pressure test gauge, to do it the right way.

You can rent one from the auto parts store.. and get your money back, when you return to buy the part you need, though.

I can backyard it, that is my specialty. But isnt the testing fitting from the diagram above testing the pressure prior to the regulator, or is the regulator between there and the in-line filter?

Answer

The regualtor is connected to the entire system... Think of it like the popoff valve on your water heater...

It bleeds off pressure as needed, so that the injector doesn't just get stuck wide open and such. But if it is stuck open, or leaking.. then the fuel system will have no pressure. In this case, thats when you have to isolate the pump, and test it by itself. This is the point you are at right now.

Understand. so if the presure at the line after the filter is good. Then I can probably rule out pump and look at regulator, otherwise its the pump. Is the regulator in the line somewhere after the test point shown above, like baried somewhere?

Answer

The regulator is up on the engine. If you test the pressure at the filter.. only from the line that comes straight out of the pump... with the rest of it disconnected.. then you are actually testing the pressure off the pump. Keep in mind that the pressure should be higher than the actual fuel pressure specification.. because the regulator.. adjusts it down, once it gets up to the engine , and sends the excess back into the tank.
