Just recently on tuesday morning I tried to start my truck and it would just crank but not fire up. but then around 5pm i tried again and it didn't at first. then 30 min trying to figure it out i tried it again and it started. then after i drove it everywhere and no problems. Then this morning i tried to start it and it didn't start same problem. i have some thought but id rather ask and expert before i start replacing parts. thanks

Answer

OK, This sounds like there is a bit of fuel running back to the tank. I would try pumping the plunger until it gets still and see if there is any fuel leaking out. It that is good, tomorrow morning, pump it before you try to start it. Then when the plunger is stiff, see how it starts.

i read on some other forums, that might be a problem also the plunger sometimes will go bad. ill try it hopefully that works.

would it being cold in the morning matter. i live in az. and in the morn its 45 and afternoon its in the 70. i also thought i could be the glo plugs? well ill try it and get back to you. thanks

Answer

Yes, the filter housing is the suspected part, so if we prime it tomorrow and it starts straight away, you know it is something around there.

I seriously doubt glow plugs. They are nearly useless until the engine gets below freezing.

just got home. and didn't start. then pumped the plunger intill it got stiff and tried to start. and i didn't just kept turning. i then opened the primeing screw and gas shot out. so thats telling me that i am getting pressure. but i am still unable to start the truck.

Ok, Can you try to jump start it? These are sensitive to the cranking RPM, so if it slower due to a weak battery, it may do this.

i just tried to jump it with my other car and ill not start still

could it be the injectors. and when i pump up the plunger untill it is stiff. should it stay stiff or would the gas go somewhere kinda like a relief. after i tried to start i went to pump it agian and it was soft

Answer

I am torn between a bad injector or a bad relief valve, ,but if it starts and runs fine when warm, then the relief valve would not be the issue. The problem we face now is testing. We would have to view the scan tool data for the measured fuel pressure.

well now its not even starting hot or cold. how do we test. is the next step taking it to a dealership and hopeing that they can figure it out since they got the tools?

I don't want to tell you that, but that might be the case. What is the mileage on your truck?

58,578 well that sucks if i gotta take it in i was really hopeing it was the fuel filter loose or something in that nature.

Answer

I will tell you some good news, your diesel engine warranty should pay for this if it is an injector issue. A loose fuel filter will leak when you pump the plunger.

ok so this might be a new one for your books. i have the edge juice with additude. i just notice when i put the key to on it wasn't lighting up. so i removed it. and it started..... so im gonna check in the morning to see if it starts to make sure that was the problem. but if not thats good to here that if its an injector its still under warrenty

Answer

A chip, boy does that change alot. I think they are more trouble than they are worth. I have a customer that has one on his truck, set only to get mileage. most of the #6 piston is missing!! The engine is $15000 CAD.

oh wow... well i reinstalled the edge and it didn't start. i now i know the edge is the reason. well the only reason i used the edge is because my; truck is lifted. the edge allows you to adjust your tires to get a correct speed and to monitor egt and gears. but yeah every once in a while i would turn it up. but mostly stock as a monitor.

Answer

That is pretty much cut and dried now. Hopefully you have warranty on the chip.

sorry about that. my last message i sent i haven't been on this website. untill i checked my email.

hey do you got a sec i got a last question. After i purchased my truck the 05 lly i noticed the turbo doesn't spool up as fast and top speed is like 110. my buddy has a 06 LBZ and his truck is fast the turbo spools up quick and he can get his truck upto 130. and my truck is not fast at all i also heard other people that have the lly and have programers that they would beat mustangs off the line... but i sit there for awhile till my turbo spools up to start moving... is it just the way the 05's are design more for towing or could there be something wrong with my truck since its not fast even one time i turned up the programer to 5 extreme it didn't make much of a difference just more black smoke... thanks

The turbo design may be one of the design changes from the LLY to the LBZ along with great HP gains. I would be very careful using any power up device. The Duramax is a great engine, but I see that they are not able to go much beyond the rated HP.
