Question

I took my jack russel ,Kira, in to see the vet a week ago 2-11-09 because for a day and a half she had been coughing and it was steadly getting worse. It sounded like what kennel cough was said to sound like. A almost honking sound with a gag on the end. The vet checked her over and said that her lungs were clear and it seemed as if she had a upper respirtory infection. maybe she had inhaled somthing. He gave me Torbutrol 1mg for cough control and Amoxicillin 100mg for infection. I was told also that if it had been kennel cough my other two dogs would of had symptoms by now. By the way my dogs are never out with other dogs that I do not know the dog and the owner and are sure are healthy. they also are up to date on all there shots. Kira slowly started getting better even though when excited she does cough still. I'm now worried about my 9 month old labadoddle she started coughing and gagging today. What could this be? what do I do ? and how infectious is this possibly?

Hello XXXXXXXXX,

This is Dr. Christian. This certainly sounds like kennel cough since your other dog is now showing symptoms. It is very contagious and can take up to 3 weeks to develop after exposure. It is generally not dangerous but rarely can progress to pnemonia if left untreated. Even dogs you might otherwise could easily carry the infection. I would recommend getting your labradoodle checked and on medications. In addition it might not be a bad idea to have your third dog vaccinated for kennel cough. The intranasal vaccine acts very quickly (starts within 24 hours) and can lessen the severity of the infection. A humidifer where they sleep might help some with the cough by the way. Thank you very much. I did forget to ask one more thing. I groom dogs in my studio that is attached to my house. All the dogs I do I have known the pet and the owner for quite a while. All have been healthy and vaccinnated. None of the ones I have done in the last month have been sick at all. Now that I know that it most likly is kennel cough how do I go about separating (like how far apart my dogs need to be away). I don't want to infect any other dogs. This is a big part of my income. Should I close down? or are there percaustions that I can take?

Answer

I definitely don't think it is necessary to shut down. I think it would be best that none of your dogs go into the grooming area obviously and I would make sure to practice good hygeine before entering your studio. Wash up well with antibacterial soap and warm water. There's not a certain distance to worry about. As long as your dogs are not entering the studio or around the areas where the other dogs frequent (such as the entrance and any part of the yard you may walk them) then you should be fine. I would keep your dogs regularly vaccinated for kennel cough however. Good luck.
