Question

I have a 1994 Bonneville and at times when I brake to turn or slow for a traffic light it just dies! I have had it on a computor and nothing shows up. It is just sitting and I don't know what to do with it! Thank's for any help. PC

Answer

Hello and thankyou for choosing Just Answer!

This is going to be 1 of 2 things.. .unless the tank is low on fuel, and is rushing to the front of the tank when you brake hard, and running the fuel system dry.... The 2 main culprits in this situation would be idle speed control system and torque converter locking system problems. Really.. all you can do is try a little test. Take it out of gear when you have to slam on the brakes like that, and see if the engine still dies. If it does, then the idle air control system is malfunctioning. If it straightens up and runs right, then the problem is with the torque converter locking system. So, if you are looking for things to replace, the 2 most common ones would be an IAC and a TCC, but a proper diagnosis is in order.. because one is easy to change but is very expensive. and the other is cheap, but very hard to change.

There is really not much you can do in this situation except for tell the technician what happened when you took it out of gear and did the same thing. Only reason being, both of these systems are entirely computer controlled, and it takes a scantool to communicate with the computer to activate the systems for testing purposes.
