Answer
Hi,
Intestinal diarrheas are divided into small and large bowel origin. In large bowel diarrhea (colitis), the stools are usually soft to jelly-like, the animal strains to pass the stool and goes in several small spots, and there may be red blood seen. Occasionally the pet will also have vomiting. Causes are usually either stress, or a bacterial infection. I treat these with a bland, low fat diet like meat baby food and intestinal antibiotics, like metronidazole. Your vet will need to see him to send this medication. Plese bring a sample of the stool in a baggie- no paper please, to aid in diagnosis. Occasionally additional antidiarrheal medication such as sulfasalazine is used. I have added a link to click on for an article for more information in this disorder.
