I have just been watching him closely and trying to make him drink lots of water. He is eating fine.

In direct reply to your question : This is not a diagnostic sign which most vets will pay any attention to at all as it can be very variable in healthy cats and can change on a day to day basis or even through the day.

If your cat is otherwise bright, alert, healthy and eating then I would ignore this symptom.
