Question

I have been travelling this last week about 26 hours in total. Last night I got off a plane in Brisbane and had a strange - pulsating sensation in my right calf muscle. I thought it was an overstretched muscle but when I stretch it out it doesn't get worse. It is not an intense pain but I have had this sensation all day. I am a 51 year old male and keep fit 3 times a week with arobic and weight exercises. With my travelling I have not ecxercised this week and dont think it is a pulled calf muslce

Answer

Thank you for the information,

From your history it appears to be due to muscle twitching or cramps.

This can from dehydration, electrolyte disturbances , abnormal posture etc.

As there is no redness or swelling , it is likely to be the cause.

However , if the sensation continues then you can have an examination by doctor to exclude the possibility of clot.

I hope this information will be helpful.

Please ask if you need any clarification.

Best wishes.

From what I have read it is sometimes the case that there are no symptoms with DVT's. My concern is that as this spasm/mild pain started directly after the flight and has, in my opinion, lasted a significiant amount of time - and not consistent with a pulled muscle - i.e. I can feel it when the muscle is totally relaxed. If the symptoms go away can I assume it is very unlikely to be a clot.

What I am unsure about is that if there are no further symptoms have the symptoms just gone away or they were as you suggest, just spasms

Typically, if DVT symptoms start in the first place, do they will continue?

Thanks

DVT can be silent also,

There is no certain way except a clinical examination to know about its cause of the pain.

If the pain is continuous it needs to be seen by doctor.

Typically DVT pain should continue but there are cases when there occurs pulmonary embolism without any symptom in the leg.

So if it remains when the muscles are relaxed , it will be safer to get it examined.
