Optional Information

Age: 3; Female; Breed: Vizsla

Already Tried:
She seems to have leaked all birthing fluid out. She had 3 puppies last night at 6:00PM. We tried to pull out the next puppy out but it is stuck. Our local Vet is telling us emergancy C-section @ 2500.00$. So the question is what are my options?

Answer

Hello,

At this point, either that puppy needs to be manually removed or both the puppy and mother are at serious risk. If the puppy is coming out feet first or tail first, it can sometimes be manipulated to head first and removed. If it's head is stuck, then it probably won't come out vaginally and c-section is needed. I would absolutely get to an emergency vet tonight. I'm worried that if this goes on too long (which is has already) the puppy will tear through the uterus and then the mom may die of a septic peritonitis. C-sections are usually around 1500 at my emergency clinic, but it does vary. I'm sure they can work with your about funds (care credit is an option), but she needs to be seen now.

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

Dr. Gary, I will not be taking her to our local vet so if there is nothing I can do myself. My option is to take her out and put her down. The puppy is head first but stuck.

Answer

Well basically what you need to do is figure out why the puppy is hung up. If it's a leg, you can usually push the puppy in a little, reach around to bend the leg up and then pull the puppy out. If it's because the head is too big to fit, then short of euthanizing and crushing the skull it will not come out. I'd try and reach in there to see what is stuck first- just push it in a little then reach to the sides to see what is hung up

Dr. Gary,We have already tried pulling with a pair of pliers on the head. So this puppy is already gone, but in the way. So if I can not get this puppy out I will put her down ASAP.

I'm sorry that she's going through this, it sounds like an awful situation for this dog. Your other option is to ask your vet how much it would be to do a fetotomy- this is where they will remove the puppy one piece at a time using a cutting wire to get the head off then the limbs one at a time. It should be able to be done fairly inexpensively (~ 200). If this is not an option and euthanasia is needed then just make sure it is done humanely by a veterinarian.
